US Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday presided over the certification of her defeat to Donald Trump four years after he tried to stop the very process that will now return him to the White House.
Her task was ceremonial and her remarks perfunctory. Standing on the dais, Harris passed copies of each state's election results to lawmakers, and she stood silently with her hands clasped in front of her while they were read out loud.
When the process was finished, Harris announced Trump's victory. She smiled tightly as Republicans gave the next president standing ovation.
The chair declares this joint session resolved, Harris said at the end. "Thank you."
She shook a few hands and kissed a few lawmakers on the cheek before departing. The entire session lasted less than a half hour.
In a video message released in the morning, Harris described her role as a sacred obligation to ensure the peaceful transfer of power.

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday said the Panchayati Raj Institutions, which provide a platform for governance and community development at the grassroots level, have played an important role in the empowerment of women.
Addressing an event here, the president advised the women representatives to discharge their responsibilities fearlessly as elected representatives in the panchayats.
She said that as a panchayat representative, they have the right to resolve mutual disputes among the villagers.
"They should use this right appropriately and try to resolve disputes among the villagers at the panchayat level itself. This will not only save people's resources and time but will also increase mutual harmony," Murmu was quoted as having said in a statement issued by her office.
She was addressing a group of Scheduled Tribe women representatives of the Panchayati Raj Institutions, who had called on her at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre here.

The Union Home Ministry has asked all states and Union territories to organise screening camps to detect and curb spread of tuberculosis in jails, saying that the closed setting and crowded areas in prisons may make them a breeding ground for transmission of the disease.
In a communication to chief secretaries of all states and UTs, the home ministry said TB is a significant public health concern in prisons.
The closed setting and crowded areas in the jails have the risk of becoming a breeding ground for TB transmission, exacerbating the burden of the disease within incarcerated populations and posing a risk to public health upon prisoners' release, the communication said.
It said that inadequate screening and lack of awareness are seen as key challenges in controlling TB inside prisons.
As part of its commitment in eliminating TB in India, the government of India recently launched a '100-Day Intensified Campaign on TB Elimination', which started on December 7, 2024.

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a batch of pleas seeking to review its October 2023 verdict declining legal sanction to same-sex marriage.
A five-judge bench of Justices B R Gavai, Surya Kant, B V Nagarathna, P S Narasimha and Dipankar Datta took up about 13 petitions related to the matter in chambers and dismissed them.
"We do not find any error apparent on the face of the record. We further find that the view expressed in both the judgements is in accordance with law and as such, no interference is warranted. Accordingly, the review petitions are dismissed," the bench said.
It said the judges have carefully gone through the judgements delivered by Justice (since retired) S Ravindra Bhat speaking for himself and for Justice (since retired) Hima Kohli as well as the concurring opinion expressed by Justice Pamidighantam Sri Narasimha, constituting the majority view.
The bench also rejected a prayer made in the review petitions for hearing in an open court.
